Terrazzo
Acorn Engineering is proud to offer a Terrazzo option in a lineup of sustainable and recycled plumbing products. Terrazzo began as a type of flooring, used in the villas around Venice during the 1560s. Today's Italian descendent of Terrazzo is made up of natural aggregate, usually marble and/or glass chips, set in colored cement binder which is finely polished and coated with a protective sealant. These naturally-occurring components create an attractive, granite-like option for countertops and shower bases, and an extremely durable, maintenance-free product.
Potential Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design (LEED) credits for:
- Terrazzo typically lasts the lifetime of the structure and is easily restored with inexpensive refinishing. (MRcr1.3 Building Reuse Credit - 1 point possible)
- In projects that require demolition of existing structures, terrazzo contractor can be reclaimed, thereby avoiding disposal into the landfill, or salvaged and re-used in the flooring of the new building project. (MRcr2.1 and 2.2 Construction Waste Management Credit - 1 to 2 points)
- Cement-based terrazzo systems are inorganic binders containing no Volatile Organic compounds (VOC's). Terrazzo is non-porous and easy to clean, promoting an anti-microbial surface and mold-free environment. (EQcr4.1 Indoor Emitting Materials Credit 4.1 or 4.2 - 1 point possible)
- Terrazzo requires very little energy usage to maintain the product over its long life, resulting in a Life Cycle Analysis that exceeds other materials. (IDcr1 Innovative Design Credit -1 point)
